I recommend this book for anyone who is confused, curious, and/or weary about conversations related to race and trying to solve problems through serious, spiritual work. If you have somehow made it through the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s 2000’s without being forced to engage in a dialogue at mandatory diversity training through work; family gatherings with all ages and political leanings represented; or just waiting patiently in line to vote or buy groceries, you have either missed out on some of the great American experiences or you have been somehow sheltered from this vibrant storm. Talking about race-related experiences evokes strong, personal, mostly painful conversations that leave many of us either wanting more or running for cover. Read this book and join the author as he fearlessly recounts personal experiences that illuminate the difficult and painful journey of one Black Man in America. Although this is clearly the author’s biographical journey, reading the book helps make clear the similar experiences of most “people of color” navigating their way through work, school, family, Life while grappling with the ravages of racism in America. I read this book in one sitting and enjoyed the “day in . the Life of…” The conversational approach the author took to share his experience is relaxed and engaging and I think anyone who is searching for a new approach to the understanding and conversation related to race or hoping for a way to build bridges rather than debate will find this read interesting and inspirational.
